Songs of Friends is a collection of Australian instrumental jazz compositions re-imagined with the addition of original lyrics by vocalist Josh Kyle.
The program includes interpretations of songs written by Daniel Gassin, Sean Coffin, Sam Keevers and Kristin Berardi. These composers have all been influential on Kyle and this is his way of acknowledging that. Wanting to keep this project to duo format, it was a dream realised to work with Sam Keevers. An exceptional pianist, bandleader and soloist in his own right, Keevers also has the amazing ability to accompany singers in a beautifully creative and sympathetic way.
“More important is the way that voice and piano mesh
and interact as intricately as if Kyle were a high-calibre horn-player.”
John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald ★★★★ (4/5 Stars)
“This seven-track collection features Kyle’s inspired reworking of tunes
by some of Australia’s leading jazz instrumentalists.”
Peter Quinn, Jazzwise Magazine ★★★★ (4/5 Stars)
“There’s no striving to impress, no dramatic dynamics for effect,
and yet within the relative simplicity of the arrangements
there resides a quietly powerful chemistry.”
Ian Patterson, All About Jazz USA
“This collection is a true duo performance where the piano is not just a background
but has a role as equally important as the vocalist,
and the two work together with a rare musical understanding.”
John McBeath, The Age ★★★★ (4/5 Stars)
